This pause lasted nearly half as long as the whole load time of the file. I've tried to improve the situation with this patch, but it touches enough code that we're uneasy about putting it in 1.1. So instead I'm putting the patch here in case anybody else has been annoyed by this behavior. Files currently attached to this page:
